    DESCRIPTION:
THE 1988 MAZDA 323 GTX. The hot, new 4WD, 16-valve, turbo 323 and its championship winning brother take on the forest trails and winding highways of Washington's Olympic Penninsula.
Professional rallying is racing at its most elemental. If motorsports is a few going where most others fear to tread, PRO Rallying is a very, very few tearing Katie-bar-the-door through places where almost no one ever goes. It's the ultimate twist of not being able to tell the forest from the trees; in PRO Rallying you often can't tell the forest from the road. This ain't easy stuff.
And in SCCA PRO Rallying's internationally recognized Group A
category, for cars that are this close to "being like those you can buy, one man and one machine dominate.
Rod Millen. Group A, PRO Rally Champion.
And his 4WD, turbo Mazda 323.
But that's not all: Millen's 4WD, turbo 323 is this close to being like one you can buy: the all-new Mazda 323 GTX.
Which fits. PRO Rallying demands everything from acar. And that's what the 323 GTX delivers.
Under the nose is a sophisticated new power plant, a terror of a 1.6-litre inline four with double-overhead cams operating 16 valves through hydraulic lash adjusters. Computer-controlled port fuel injection manages the fuel while an intercooled turbo boosts power from the exciting to the serious. Ready to roll off the showroom floor, this stormer delivers 132 hp at 6000 rpm and 136 lb.-ft. of torque at 3000 rpm.
Backing it up is a close-ratio 5-speed gearbox that leaves no excuses for being anywhere but smack-dab somewhere in the middle of this engine's pumped-up power curve.
But engine performance is only part of it. Because whether you're chasing rallying trophies or just out for a drive, any power you can't put to the ground is power wasted. And the 323 GTX puts all its power to whatever passes for road through one of the most advanced full-time four-wheel-drive systems in the world.
Part of the secret is Mazda's slick planetary center differential, an ingeniously compact device that splits the engine's torque evenly front-to-rear while aading only minimal extra weight. And when the going gets really tough, an electric lock-up mechanism keeps things going.
What else? It stops through power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes
with ventilated front rotors. It grips the pavement with high-performance 185/60HR14 tires on alloy rims. It handles anything that comes its way with fully independent suspension, featuring Mazda's patented Twin Trapezoidal Link rear layout that's been finely calibrated for this 4WD application. It corners lean and mean with front and rear anti-roll bars and shock rates that mean business.
Inside, multi-adjustable contoured sport bucket seats keep you
firmly behind the wheel that controls the power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. Complete instrumentation gives a constant readout of all vital functions.
And, as you can see, it's all wrapped up in efficient sleekness. Tidy. Clean. But assuredly - oh yes; most assuredly - tough. It has to be, or Rod Millen would drive something else on his way to victory circle.
But he doesn't. He drives a 4WD, turbo Mazda 323.
The Olympus Rally carves along the Olympic Peninsula's forest roads like a chainsaw run amok. This ain't easy stuff indeed.  But whet
her scooting along misty pavement, sashaying through sunshine, or ripping down some lost forest trail - gravel spitting off the tires like popcorn off a skillet — Mazda's 323 GTX is ready to deliver everything.
Whether it's a great drive on a clear day.
Or just another hard-won rally trophy for your shelf.
